Canyon cleaners fight flood of trash

Twice a year, some of the people who deeply love the Auburn State Recreation Area near Auburn travel into the canyon - and get really angry.

A place of intense beauty, the canyon brings enjoyment to people like Protect American River Canyons treasurer Andrea Rosenthal, but Saturday's late-summer cleanup along the north fork and confluence areas was disconcerting.

Rosenthal was part of a group of about 100 volunteers who picked up trash from the canyon ranging from bottles and cans to bicycles and couches - and got a bit upset in the process.

The sofa was particularly maddening for volunteers. Two were taken from the canyon below the 730-foot-high Foresthill bridge - a popular spot for people to illegally throw objects off of.

"It's got to be more trouble to throw it off the bridge than it would to take them to the dump," Rosenthal said.
