Officials warn that cold water and a fast current can drain the strength of any swimmer.
A sunny day on the American River turned bleak Sunday when a 26-year-old San Leandro man rafting with friends apparently drowned.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District received a report at 12:15 p.m. Sunday of a possible drowning upstream from the San Juan Rapids, on the north side of the American River.
A rescue boat was dispatched to the scene, where paramedics found the man onshore, receiving CPR from bystanders, Capt. Jeff Lynch said.
