{"id":1796,"date":"2013-12-30T08:40:23","date_gmt":"2013-12-30T16:40:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.americanriverwildlife.com\/?p=1796"},"modified":"2013-12-30T08:40:23","modified_gmt":"2013-12-30T16:40:23","slug":"mormon-island-settlement-revealed-in-folsom-lake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.americanriverwildlife.com\/?p=1796","title":{"rendered":"Mormon Island Settlement Revealed In Folsom Lake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The city of Folsom has reported that low lake levels have revealed a settlement known as Mormon Island that hasn&#8217;t been seen since 1955.<\/p>\n<p>KCRA in Sacramento\u00a0reported that the island town, which is usually under Folsom Lake, grew out of a larger Mormon settlement on the American River during the Gold Rush.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mormon Island thrived during mining years with as many as 2,500 people, complete with four hotels, a school and seven saloons, according to some historical accounts,&#8221; KCRA reported.<\/p>\n<p>Sightseers and amateur archeologists are now exploring the island, and they reported seeing stone foundations, a capped well, rusty nails and other debris.<\/p>\n<p>The area was intentionally flooded in 1955 when Folsom Dam was built to create Folsom Lake.
