State officials are being urged to close\u00a0fishing\u00a0seasons on the American River in the Sacramento area to protect\u00a0steelhead\u00a0and salmon from\u00a0fishing\u00a0pressure as the river declines amid drought conditions.<\/p>\n
The Sierra Salmon Alliance\u00a0on Wednesday\u00a0urged the California Department of\u00a0Fish\u00a0and Wildlife to close the fishery on the river. Tyrone Gorre, co-founder of the group, said he is concerned that as the river shrinks,\u00a0steelhead\u00a0migrating upstream to spawn will be unable to avoid the many anglers trying to hook them.<\/p>\n
In addition, he fears\u00a0fish\u00a0eggs already in the river, spawned by fall-run Chinook salmon, will be trampled and killed by anglers walking in the river.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s so much extreme pressure on the river that there\u2019s no place for the\u00a0fish\u00a0to hide,\u201d said Gorre, also a professional\u00a0fishing\u00a0guide on the river for 30 years. \u201cWe need to have swift and immediate action to accommodate those\u00a0fish. It\u2019s just a really critical situation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Salmon season has ended, but\u00a0steelhead\u00a0fishing\u00a0is normally allowed year-round.<\/p>\n
