{"id":2550,"date":"2014-10-17T10:01:35","date_gmt":"2014-10-17T17:01:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.americanriverwildlife.com\/?p=2550"},"modified":"2014-10-17T10:01:35","modified_gmt":"2014-10-17T17:01:35","slug":"winter-rains-not-likely-to-ease-california-drought","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.americanriverwildlife.com\/?p=2550","title":{"rendered":"Winter Rains Not Likely To Ease California Drought"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Drought conditions will likely ease in much of the West this winter, but not in most of California, according to a new climate report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.<\/p>\n<p>The report, released Thursday, indicates that conditions in the Pacific Ocean, which include a developing El Ni\u00f1o weather pattern, may prompt above-average rainfall for the southern third of California over the next three months.<\/p>\n<p>The Bay Area, however, as well as most of the rest of the state, stands only a one-third chance of seeing above-average rain \u2014 and equal chances for below-average rain and a normal amount.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s just not a strong enough climate signal to make a prediction,\u201d said Mike Halpert, acting director of NOAA\u2019s Climate Prediction Center.<\/p>\n<p>The forecast bodes poorly for Northern California, where residents are hoping a wet winter erases some of the costs of the state\u2019s driest three-year period on record, including tight drinking-water supplies, fallowed agricultural fields and damaging wildfires.<\/p>\n<p>But even a wetter-than-average winter would provide only a modicum of drought relief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will take significantly above-average precipitation to fill reservoirs and recharge groundwater,\u201d Halpert said.<\/p>\n<p>The only good news for California, according to federal climate experts, is that the stubborn ridge of high-pressure air that consistently formed off the coast in recent years, blocking storms from making shore, won\u2019t be nearly as prevalent.<\/p>\n<p>The probable El Ni\u00f1o, which forms when the jet stream reacts with warm ocean surface waters, will likely push enough moisture across the high sea to keep the ridge from settling in, Halpert said.<\/p>\n<p>More at <a title=\"SFGate.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/Winter-rains-not-likely-to-ease-California-drought-5827338.php\" target=\"_blank\">SFGate.com<\/a> &gt;&gt;&gt;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Drought conditions will likely ease in much of the West this winter, but not in most of California, according to a new climate report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
