A woman drowned Friday morning in the American River near Sacramento State, fire crews said.

Sacramento firefighters tried to rescue the woman from the water about 10:25 a.m. between the H Street Bridge and the Guy West Bridge, officials said.

However, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
