Shingle Springs man found dead in river

A 63-year-old man was found dead Tuesday in the American River near Hastings Creek north of Coloma, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department.

He was identified Wednesday as Lawrence Locken of Shingle Springs.

His body was discovered on a rocky bar in the middle of the river, according to a news release. He had been dredging for gold in the river Monday, where friends said they last saw him about 4 p.m.
